Today began with a focus on newspapers. The class brainstorm showed Angela and I that the learners had a good understanding of newspapers.
They used think, pair, share and reported back when I chose the reporter. The groups shared ideas and supported each other. They really enjoyed looking at the actual papers and could identify the features we brainstormed. We went on to look at layout and print features using pens to block off different areas in preparation for our own article.
The suggested context in the curriculum books is sometimes of little relevance to the learners so Angela and I decided to choose a much more meaningful context, school and classroom provision. This really motivated the learners and allowed them to have ownership of the story we were developing. I used shared writing to allow the whole class to produce the article and then encouraged the children to chose their own additions to the page.
It was great to see some independent thinking from the learners who used their own ideas.
I went to standard 8 to introduce myself and help them practise their English. I answered a lot of questions!
On the way home we were out pricing paint for the schools who need libraries supported and developed. I am heading to school with Lorraine on Friday to help paint the school's library area she is creating.
